When was the last time you performed an act of service without strings attached? Friendship is about serving each other. A friend commits to invest in another person's life exhibiting the core value Jesus taught. He said, "Love one another". Take a relational risk today! Invest your time, talents and things to make someone better than they already are. Pay attention to their needs, strengthen their weaknesses and trust that God will guide you to be the best friend a person could ever have. A wise person once said to me that "the ministry may seem to be about events and programs but the truth remains that the ministry is about people. Without the people there is no need for ministry."

In Kids Inc we follow a simple motto:

One of the coolest experiences to have is to see how quickly a visiting child is accepted into our ministry. The connection only takes a few seconds and the friendships last a whole lot longer. There is much to be learned from a child. They teach us more than we as "mature" Christians are willing to learn. Take a risk today! pour your life, love and selflessness into a friend today and tell me how you feel afterwards.

I want to take this opportunity to thank my co-workers for Christ... To all my volunteers: You made Easter Sunday one of the best Sundays we've had all year. This ministry would be nothing without you. Thank you for being faithful to God.

Today we celebrated the true reason for Easter... Jesus is Alive!

If that same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you then stir it up and watch God work through you. Here's something to think about...

At 6:39 PM today my 5 year old daughter Miranda prayed and asked Jesus to come into her heart and be her Savior forever. Tears of joy rolled down my cheeks as I heard her make the greatest decision she could ever make. Today is the best day of my life!

A mop and a bucket

It always astounds me how God uses ordinary people, things and circumstances to teach an extraordinary lesson. Yesterday, I went to the "His House" orphanage to help prepare one of the buildings for the arrival of Haiti orphans. For the next eleven hours I either had a mop in my hand or a broom or a toilet brush. The experience brought me back to one of my early lessons as a new believer. When I was first saved, my mother was hired by our church in Trinidad to do the cleaning and preparation process for each service. After school my brother an I would assist her in any way we could. Soon, my father gave his life to the Lord and the entire family roamed the halls, bathrooms and stairs with a mop and a bucket in hand. We counted it a privilege to serve in any capacity since our focus was to do something for God in gratitude for our salvation. As I once again held a mop in my hand, it brought back memories that were not so pleasant. About two years later our family received the devastating news that my mom would spend the rest of her life dealing with Rheumatoid arthritis and that she would be bedridden. I watched as my father, a shift worker and new Christian struggled to take care of his wife and do her tasks at the church as well as care for two teenage boys. Finally, I had to do something. What was once a family job would have to become my responsibility. After swinging a mop for hours I would pray at that altar for God to heal my mother and take the pressure off my father. Prayers of desperation turned to worship and worship developed into a relationship with God. I sought God and He found me. Sometimes God isolates us to change us. What seemed like an ordinary after-school labor of love for my parents became the forging ground for my faith. I look back at those precious moments and I thank God that He changed me. Those times of prayer had no rush order status because I refused to leave until I sensed God's presence and peace. I truly believe that I am ministering today because of my faithfulness in those little tasks when I was a young Christian. God can use anything and anyone He chooses to fulfill His great plan. I never thought in a million years I would be a minister of the Gospel while I was using that mop and bucket.

Reader, never despise the day of small beginnings for God sees everything and uses the crisis situations to form you into what He wants you to be. When you feel insignificant, under-appreciated, overlooked, belittled, stereotyped or mistreated, just reach for "Mop and Bucket" experience. Though the circumstances seem overwhelming use it to get closer to God.

See a need fill a NEED

Special thanks to Sterling, Maria, Angela, Raquel and Andrew for their labor of love on Sunday in Kids INC. I am asked by people who are interested in assisting our ministry to children a very valid question. They ask, "Pastor Kevin, I would like to assist you with the kids. How much time do you think I should commit to?" My answer is not always received with an open mind, but my intentions are to help them understand what they are asking me. My response is usually this..."There is always a need for help in Children's Ministry. As long as Church is in progress, we need you to impact these kids for Jesus" This response let's the well-natured person see that the kids need Godly examples to mentor them as they grow in the faith. However, the answer to the latter part of the question usually leaves them thinking. They ask, "How much time do you think I should commit to?" What if one day a call comes in to the Church and the person on the line says, "How much should I tithe this week?" or "How much should I give in the offering this week?" My dear reader I could almost hear you chuckle while others are almost offended but before you take any action please read on.

When we become involved in ministry it is an act of worship. Worship is showing God how much He is worth to you by giving your time, talents, things or by just being available. No person can measure your act of worship! If you desire to become involved in ministry... DO IT because that is worship. Sunset Chapel needs you! Demonstrate your spiritual act of worship by rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty for God. Hebrews 10:24 says, "Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works." (NLT)

On Sunday while praying with my kids I listened as this generation was crying out for a genuine experience with God. The simplicity of their prayers brought me back to Paul's words to the people of God. It's time to keep things in perspective, the only thing that is of any importance is living in the approval of God. In 1Thessalonians 2:4 it says, "We have been approved by God." We don't serve God because we need His approval, we serve Him because He has already approved of us once we've accepted His call. Who we are in Christ is more important than what we do for Him. Nothing else matters! As for the church,It's time to get back to basics. Come to God as a little child. Here's a big question, "When did marketing, advertising, scorekeeping, fundraising, etc. become more important than knowing God, loving God, growing in God and making Him known?" Our approval should not rise and fall upon other people's opinions. People will only accept us as long as we keep them happy but God loves at all times. Live freely knowing that you are not a slave to people's fleeting affections, but you belong to God.

Haiti

Praying for Haiti as we gather for prayer 7PM tonight. Let's also figure out how we can add feet to our faith. Parents tell your kids to bring a little extra on Sunday as we challenge them to give their change (coins) in order to make a change in Haiti. I have a friend named Ebed Paul who lives in Haiti. He's okay but his country is devastated. He works with orphanages. Stand with me as we help.

Whether we wish to agree or not, people are always watching us. Before you decide to turn your eyes away from the screen to see who it is, think about how many people you interact with daily. How many of them know you are a follower of Jesus? The only view they may have of Christianity is you.

Only one game away from winning the championship! Again we've proved that we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength. About two months ago Sunset Christian Academy began recruiting for the 2009 Soccer season. Some of the players had never touched a soccer ball or played in a league of any kind. Though the drills and training were difficult, this year's players have fought a great fight. As of today their record reflects four wins and one loss. Only one more win to go... the championship. If we believe, it shall be done according to His Name. Pray for them.

A Christmas Carol

Just an FYI... When Charles Dickens wrote a Christmas Carol the story literally changed the way people celebrated Christmas in a time when poverty, political injustice and child labor were the controversial issues of the day. Mr. Dickens had made such an impact with his story that when he died a little girl remarked... "Mr. Dickens dead? Will Father Christmas die too?" 100 years from now it will not matter what kind of car we drove or what kind of house we live in but that we could make a difference in the life of a child.
